5 signs your child is ready for the 11+

Every parent wonders at some point: is my child ready? Here are five signs that suggest they're on track — and one honest note about what to do if they're not.

They can manage their time under pressure

Timed practice papers no longer cause panic. Your child completes sections calmly, leaving time to check work. If they're still leaving multiple questions blank due to time, that's a sign more timed practice is needed.

Verbal reasoning feels natural

They can spot patterns in word relationships and number sequences without needing to stop and think. Verbal reasoning is often the area children find most unfamiliar — consistent exposure from Year 4 onwards makes a significant difference.

They're reading regularly

Wide reading builds vocabulary and comprehension speed — both essential for GL and CEM papers. Children reading 20+ minutes a day typically perform noticeably better on the English reasoning sections.

Mock exam scores are improving consistently

One good score is luck. Three in a row is preparation. Look for an upward trend over 6–8 weeks of structured revision rather than any single result.

They talk about it confidently

Children who feel ready will tell you. Listen for the shift from anxiety to quiet confidence — "I know what to do when I get stuck" is a very good sign.

If your child isn't there yet, that's exactly what our Year 5 programme is designed to address. A free assessment will tell you precisely where they stand.
